There seems to be a notion around the gaming community that casual gaming, as loosely defined as it is, is somehow inferior to any other, more hardcore gaming. People seem to think that because they play a game for more hours or are more skilled than another, that they are better off. For those people, I have this to write.

Look, most people play games for fun. I do not see why you would play a game just to beat others if you aren’t having fun. In the end, it is a simple entertainment medium. The competitiveness is just a secondary thing that comes along with it, but you should always be having fun. Otherwise, it really isn’t a game to you anymore.

The belief that being a casual gamer is worse doesn’t make any sense to me. A lot of us casual gamers are adults with real jobs, families, and other stuff to handle. We play video games for mere entertainment after long days and to ease our minds of everything that’s transpired. Quite frankly, we don’t care enough to be offended by rants of not being skilled enough or not doing something correctly. That is why you mostly see teenagers on their mics and actually communicating. A large part of that is because many adults cannot be bothered enough to plug in their mic to talk to people that care more than they do.

While we’re at it, why don’t we just dispose of the whole “casual gamers” vs. “hardcore gamers” concept. I realize I made the mistake of also comparing it to an “adults” vs. “younger audience” ordeal in this post, but I just really want it to end. Gamers are gamers, and we all just want to have fun. There shouldn’t be any reason to flame other people, over the internet, nonetheless, just because they do not take the game as seriously as you do.
