Farewell, Anthem. We Hardly Knew Ya

BioWare announced today that further development on Anthem, also known as Anthem NEXT, has been canceled.

The long-awaited update / reboot to the game will never see the light of day. Released back in 2019, Anthem was set to be the next big thing since Destiny. A revolutionary looter-shooter in which you piloted weaponized suits in Tony Stark / Iron Man fashion. I mean, what could go wrong? Apparently? Everything.

Anthem released to much criticism. It was a game that nailed the gameplay mechanics but often felt incomplete and limited in content.

BioWare Austin Studio Director announced today:

“In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.”

In recent weeks, reports indicated that EA would decide whether to continue developing Anthem NEXT or be pulling the plug.

“2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams.”

Anthem was a game with infinite potential but ultimately flew too close to the sun.
