Celebrate Halloween With These 10 Spooky Games

It’s the spookiest time of the year! We here at MysteryBlock have compiled a list (in no particular order) of some of the scariest games you should play! From horrifying narrative adventures to games that will play tricks on you and have you questioning your sanity. It’s time to talk about some of the best spooky games! Join us and celebrate Halloween with our 10 favorite horror games!

Dead Space (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Starting off with an absolute heavy hitter in the horror genre. Dead Space is recognized as one of the scariest games to hit last-gen gaming. A survival horror game set in well, space! You play as an engineer named Issac Clarke who investigates a mining ship overrun by deadly creatures called Necromorphs. The game’s tension building and atmosphere is sure to keep you on edge the entire time. It’s one of the only games on this list in which I had to take breaks because I was physically exhausted after every level. If you want to experience some of the best scares in gaming you won’t want to miss out on Dead Space.

Resident Evil VII (PC, Xbox One, PS4, PSVR)

I experienced Resident Evil in VR. I probably should have played it normally but PSVR was new and I really wanted to test out its immersion capabilities. Boy was I immersed. REVII was terrifying through a VR headset. I found myself trying to anticipate every scare imaginable with little success. I noticed my progress was noticeably slow as I crept around every corner. Although you can technically play REVII without a VR headset, playing in virtual reality amped up the fear. Seeing the world through the eyes of Ethan Winters as he searches for his wife through a nightmarish hell will terrify you every step of the way.

Silent Hill 2 (PS2, Xbox 360)

Silent Hill 2 is the unsettling story of James Sunderland who travels to the town of Silent Hill after he receives a letter from his dead wife. In the letter his wife tells James she would be waiting for him in Silent Hill. It is a roller coaster of a horror game filled with terrifying creatures and the infamous Pyramid Head character. Silent Hill 2, like its predecessor, is a psychological survival horror game that will have you journey through hell and back unlocking the mysteries behind the death of James’ wife, Maria. What you discover will be unsettling.

Until Dawn (PS4)

Until Dawn sets out to capture the feel of teen slasher movies and does so quite convincingly. You play as 8 teenagers trying to survive Blackwood Mountains while being threatened by a killer one year after the death of their friends Hannah and her sister Beth. Whether you survive until dawn depends on the choices you make. Your choices have consequences. The penalty? Death! Until Dawn is a thrill ride that feels like an interactive movie. Only you can determine whether the characters in your story live or die.

Alan Wake (PC, Xbox 360)

When the wife of best-selling writer Alan Wake goes missing, the pages of a novel he never wrote leads to clues about her disappearance. In a story that seems to be taken straight from an episode of the Twilight Zone, Alan Wake quickly realizes that there’s more to the town of Bright Falls than meets the eye. Like Silent Hill, Alan Wake is a psychological horror-thriller adventure that keeps you engaged through its mysterious narrative. Be sure to stop and watch every episode of Night Springs along the way. It’s a fictional paranormal TV show that pays clear homage to Twilight Zone. Alan Wake is a fantastic horror thriller that will grip you from beginning to end.

Resident Evil 2 (2020) (PC, Xbox One, PS4)

Possibly one of the greatest video game remakes of all time, Resident Evil 2 takes everything we loved about the original and improves it in almost every way. Modernized for current-gen gaming, Resident Evil 2 is a masterpiece that takes the world of Raccoon City and adds more than enough elements to make it feel like a brand new experience. You owe it to yourself to revisit the zombie-infested Raccoon City and help contain the spread of the virus unleashed by the Umbrella Corp. Resident Evil 2 is a clear example of a remake done right.

Dead by Daylight (PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch)

If you want to experience panic-stricken horror with your friends you should definitely try out Dead by Daylight. This asymmetric horror game places you and 3 other friends in a nightmare scenario where you try and repair generators in order to power up the exit gates and escape from the killer trying to murder and sacrifice you and your friends. The nightmarish killers are inevitable and you will die. Dead by Daylight’s replay value will have you trying to make your escape over and over again. Even better—you can take on the role of the killer! Featuring dozens of killers from Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, to the Demogorgan from Stranger Things.

Eternal Darkness (Nintendo GameCube)

Eternal Darkness is a psychological horror-adventure that found a niche audience on the Nintendo GameCube. It instantly became a cult-classic despite never truly getting the recognition it deserved. Similar in gameplay style to Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Eternal Darkness uses a unique sanity system that not only plays tricks on your character but the player as well. The best of them being the fourth wall breaks. As you lose your sanity, the game can make you think your volume is being turned down or muted, it can have you believe your controller has been disconnected from your console, and even trick you into thinking that your game has crashed via the blue screen of death.

Phasmophobia (PC Steam, VR)

The newest game on our list, Phasmophobia is a psychological horror co-op game in which you go ghost hunting with your friends. You can purchase various tools to help you on your hunt as you determine what is haunting the various locations. Communication is key but be aware that open mic communication can be heard by the ghosts in the game. Adding another level of interactivity within the game itself. Did we mention that it can be played in VR? This is definitely the game to play if you want to live out your ghost hunting fantasies from the safety of your PC.

Stories Untold (PC)

This narrative-driven adventure game is one of the most unique games on this list. Stories Untold takes 4 individual stories each told in their own way with different gameplay mechanics. If you are looking for a spooky adventure that will mess with your head this game is for you. Stories Untold is an experience and definitely a game you’ve probably never played before. Its original approach to visual storytelling is a fantastic thrill-ride that makes this game stand out in a big way.

Horror games have always been one of my favorite gaming genres despite my huge fear of the terrifying unknown. I’m fascinated with the way survival horror games can take us out of our comfort zone and fill us with dread. These 10 horror games are just some of the best the genre has to offer. They’re scary, fun, and perfect for celebrating Halloween! What are your favorite horror games?
