Gearbox Software, developers of the Borderlands franchise and publisher to recent PS5 console exclusive Godfall has been purchased by Embracer Group. Formerly known as THQ Nordic and Nordic Games Publishing, Embracer Group purchased the development studio for $1.3 Billion.
EMBRACER GROUP’S TAKEOVER
In November Embracer Group announced that they had acquired 12 gaming studios and a PR firm in a single day. Although many of those studios are developers of smaller indie and mobile titles, Gearbox Software is known for developing Triple-A titles. Borderlands 3 has already sold nearly 8 million copies and will more than likely surpass it. Since its release on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, Borderlands 3 has continued to see a steady stream of DLC content with Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot being released just this past December. 2K has also announced that it will still publish Borderlands despite the takeover.
Now with over 200+ franchises in its catalog including Saints Row, Dead Island, and the long-absent TimeSplitters, one can only wonder what these franchises could become in the hands of Gearbox Software. I don’t know about you but I would love to see the revival of TimeSplitters in the style of Borderlands. Also, can we please finally get a release date for Dead Island 2? The game has been in limbo since its reveal in 2014.
A CHANGING LANDSCAPE
It seems that the gaming industry continues to reshape as studio acquisitions continue to ramp up. Microsoft’s recent $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media is part of an on-going search for additional studios to add to its brand. With Sony looking to potentially add additional studios, it feels like the set of musical chairs is getting smaller for major studios.
